Creating A Safe Space

I have noticed that many of us are being called right now to really create a safe space for ourselves, where our deepest needs can safely express themselves and we can feel supported in our ability to live from our place of deepest truth, allowing ourselves to truly heal.
Many of us have spent our lives extremely focused on our external conditions. We have spent our energy adapting to our ever changing environment, the people in our lives, the things we are told we must accomplish in order to a) survive b) be accepted and c) be successful.
Often times we are completely disregarding how we are feeling about all this adapting, believing the pay off will come later. I will be happy when: my parents are proud of me, when I find the right profession, when I am married, when I have kids, when the kids are grown, when I retire..
When we begin to look at what we have been ignoring, we begin to realize just how unhappy, unhealthy, uncomfortable, uncertain and so many other things that aren't very fun to look at, that we actually are. We will often find that we really don't want to look at these things and have been avoiding doing so hoping that they would just go away!!
This is where we begin, Noticing.
In order to notice, what we have been avoiding, we must be willing to create space. This means finding a still, quite space where you can begin to Listen to your internal stirrings. Keeping in mind that because you have spent so long avoiding these energies, you may find yourself wanting to continue this avoidance.
Creating a safe space can encourage you to continue your practice even when it is uncomfortable.
This space can be a physical, visualized or spiritual place that you create for yourself (it will be most effective if it is a combination of the three). This place allows you to feel safe and able to sit with yourself uninterrupted for however long that you choose. In this space we want to allow ourselves to feel physically relaxed and at ease, allowing ourselves to be fully present with what is happening within us in this moment, as much as possible. We may choose to surround ourselves with the things that bring us comfort or help us relax such as a favorite blanket or a type of music.
In this space, you are able to first become aware of your thoughts and what the mind is creating, when you are focusing outwardly.
From here you will begin to become aware of the emotional responses that you are having to the thoughts you may not have even been aware that you were thinking.
Next we can begin to practice focusing our thoughts in ways that begin to create better feeling emotions.
From this place of awareness our possibilities become limitless, depending on our willingness to bring awareness to where we are focusing.
Beginning this practice of noticing can be very challenging at first, especially if we don't allow ourselves the support that we need. It is important to relax and remember that you are always in control and nothing has to change before you are ready.
It is also very important that you don't expect too much from yourself!! Some days you will be able to sit for 30 plus minutes and feel wonderful at the end and other days your may find yourself wanting to run away after 2 to 5 minutes. Both are perfectly okay and even wonderful. Notice what was different from one day to the next, it will be helpful
in deciding when you may need to implement additional support for yourself.
There are endless tools that are available to you as you begin this practice for yourself including:
*A seemingly endless variety of yoga and meditation
