Reaching for the Next Right Thing

If you have worked with me before it is almost certain that you have heard me say, you can’t go from being stuck in a hole to being on the mountain top without taking some steps in between. What I mean by this is simple. You are not going to will yourself from feeling awful to feeling great it just doesn’t work that way.

Feeling good is something that we must practice, if it is not something that we already naturally experience. Why?

Well, because we have gotten really good at practicing not feeling good!! In our practice of not feeling good we have trained our minds to look for problems, to avoid dealing with things we cannot find solutions for, to overlook things that make us uncomfortable, to make others feelings our responsibility and on and on.

If we want to feel better we must be willing to retrain ourselves to reach for what feels good. To celebrate our solutions, to appreciate our blessings, to find joy in our daily experience.

Now does this mean ignore your problems and just look for what feels good?

Some will tell you, yes and for some of us yes is the right answer, if you truly believe it. It is absolutely true that if you are able to let go of any fear or resistance you have surrounding something and focus on something that is working for you and that you feel good about things will work out.

Unfortunately, for most of us believing that we are ignoring our problems will make things better actually creates more of a block than facing the problem. We just aren’t able to come to peace and so even when we are ignoring it, it’s still in the background asking for attention.

You see there is no one size fits all way of aligning. Alignment happens when you are living YOUR truth and everyone has their own.

So for some the best solution is to ignore the problem, because they truly have faith that the problem will solve itself and it does or seems to. While others believe they must Do something to solve the problem and so if they ignore it, it does get worse, because of the energy that is being held around it.

How you personally feel about any given subject is the determining factor of how you can best react to it. If you don’t believe that something is going to work, it most likely won’t. Notice what you believe and how you feel when you are making decisions and notice how those feelings and beliefs are affecting the outcomes you experience. This is just another level of awareness that will give you power when you are deciding what will feel best to you.

So, when we find ourselves in that hole we talked about earlier, we will need to reach for the tools and focus that will bring us first into a neutral space (out of the hole and feeling like we have a firm foundation) and then into a happy or at least content space, from here we are much more likely to move into a space where we experience joy, excitement and even bliss (mountain top emotions!!).

Again, we are looking at a practice. Here are some guidelines that it may be helpful to follow:

First notice that you don’t feel as good as you would like to.

Second you implement tools that help you move to a better thinking/feeling place.

This builds momentum that is likely to continue to carry you into better and better feelings, and it also reminds your systems to function in a more natural, less resistant way, helping you to begin to feel better all the time with little to no effort!!

The more you notice when you don’t feel your best and are willing to implement the right tools and strategies to support yourself the better you will feel.

The most confusing part of this for most of us is finding and implementing the right tools. We often have the tools and don’t use them, or we are so entrenched in our old cycles and behaviors we find ourselves stuck and unable to reach for the tools and we just give up. Others will do well for a short time, but due to lack of focus or commitment will fall off and not notice until they find themselves back in the hole.

The last scenario is very common. We are good about practicing when we feel bad, but when we start to feel a little better we hope that it will stick and we stop doing the work!! This too is a pattern that we must bring awareness to in order to move past it.

It is important to accept you will always be moving into new levels of awareness, we are looking to feel better now, rather than to arrive at a final destination where we are perpetually happy.

We must remember, there is no blue print. Each of us are going to respond differently to different things and this is why our journey is very unique and can often feel lonely, isolating, confusing and frustrating.
